Ninety minutes on a segway beats a whole day on foot.
Which cities still let the machines onto the good streets. What the training lap actually covers. Which rides sit on cobbles and which stay on tarmac. Reviews of every guided segway tour worth booking.
Four segway rides that explain the machine in one morning.
The rides travellers book before anything else, on four continents. What each costs, and how long you are standing on the wheels.

Spain runs more segway tours than anywhere else. Then the United States.
Six countries hold most of the world’s guided segway inventory: Spanish plazas and beach paths, American monument loops and boardwalks, French riverbanks, German park circuits, Italian piazzas, and the tiled hills above the Tagus.
Three Spanish cities, three completely different segway hours.
Spain carries more guided segway routes than any other country, and they are not variations on one ride: a medieval grid, a royal park, and nine flat kilometres of drained riverbed.
The segway city tour is the shape of the whole activity.
Nine rides in ten are a guided loop of a centre: a briefing in a square, an hour or two of monuments, and a cobbled stretch that decides how much fun the machine turns out to be. These are the ones that get it right.
One hour on a segway is short. Three is a different day.
Standing still costs nothing. Standing for three hours costs your calves, and there is a reason the taster rides exist. Pick the length first; the route follows from it.
All 959 rides we have reviewed →- 01One hour from $29Briefing, a lap of the centre, done. The cheap way to find out whether you like it.
- 02Two hours from $27The standard. A full old town plus one river or beach stretch.
- 03Three hours and up from $35Two districts, a real stop, and usually the hill the guide warned you about.
What a guided segway tour costs, worldwide.
Every ride on the site, grouped by price. The short city loops sit well under fifty dollars; private guides and off-road machines are where the money goes.
Taster rides, one-hour city loops and the big-group departures across Spain and central Europe.

- 2Segway Coastal Scenic Rainforest Tourfrom $177
- 3Juneau Alpine Segway Wilderness Trail Adventurefrom $179
Three kinds of segway ride that leave the old town behind.
Most of the world’s segway inventory is a guided lap of a centre. These three are not: they run after dark, off the tarmac, or along a coastline.

A city with the lights on
Once the pavement empties it is finally yours, which is the whole argument for an evening departure. Guides run the same monuments they do at noon, lit instead, and the machines carry their own lamps. Expect a slower pace: the cobbles you cannot see are the ones that catch a wheel.

The fat-tyre machines
An off-road segway is a different device. Knobbly tyres, more ground clearance, enough torque to climb a gravel track. These rides trade monuments for dirt: red earth in the Australian outback, forest fire roads, vineyard rows. Training takes longer, because loose ground moves under you.

Promenades and beach paths
A flat, wide seafront is the best surface a segway will ever meet, and it is where the machine stops feeling like a curiosity. Miami Beach, Barceloneta, the Algarve promenades. The catch is sand: blown across the path it is slippery, and most operators turn back rather than cross it.

A segway tour comes with rules, and they are not negotiable.
Almost every operator sets a minimum age, usually somewhere between twelve and sixteen, and a weight range at both ends — too light and the machine will not balance you. Closed-toe shoes are required. Helmets are provided and usually compulsory. The first ten minutes are a training lap nobody skips, and heavy rain or high wind cancels the departure.
Some cities were made for a segway. Barcelona was.
Flat, wide, paved, and interesting in that order. Barcelona has the sea path, Budapest the castle hill, Paris the river quays, Madrid a park the size of a district. Four cities where the machine is the right way round the centre.
